DIY Producers

SBP -- Artists can bypass expensive productions houses when doing their own recording, provided they have the skill set necessary to handle the equipment. Mark McCabe and Damien McCaul have done just that in Future Code Productions, a multimedia partnership in the Factory beside Dublin's Grand Canal Basin. David Bowie, The Corrs and U2 have rehearsed and recorded there. It lets out space at reasonable rates.

Some things you can see or hear when hanging out in the Factory:

• ProTools makes professional recording easy. Hang the software onto a 32-track recording desk and you're in business.
• Like Tipperary Institute. many of the video producers have the Canon XL1 DV camera and a GlideCam (steadicam) harness.
• You get your skills vetted when you do video production work for top bands.
• Artists like David Kitt have recorded ni their bedrooms, proving that talent and commitment can overcome money and promotion on the way up the charts.
