Sunday Tribune blogging extracts
TRIBUNE -- The Sunday Tribune's weekly recap of blogging features selections from several Irishblogs, including Best Of Both Worlds, Irish Eagle, Redmum, and Tom Raftery.
Does Non Mean No? Depends on Who You Ask. Best of Both Worlds was among a flood of bloggers who reacted to the defeat of the EU Constitution in France and Holland with something like glee.
In particular, it's time for a reminder of the complete and utter pomposity that characterised the Republic of Ireland's period holding the rotating presidency in the first half of last year, the period that produced every element of the debacle in France yesterday: the Constitution itself, the 10-country enlargement to which French voters clearly reacted so badly, and the overall sense of an EU driven by elite priorities.
There's clearly a Eurosceptic feel out there in the blogosphere. Irish Eagle was so bemused by the refusal of EU leaders to accept the voters' rejection that he labelled the Constitution "undead", parodying the Monty Python parrot: "No, no he's not dead, he's he's restin'! Remarkable bird, the Norwegian Blue, idn't it, ay? Beautiful plumage!"
Czech PM Jiri Paroubek wants the ratification process delayed. EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso called on member states to proceed with ratification and not pre-empt their summit meeting with unilateral decisions before then.
What's with these people? The plumage don't enter into it. It's stone dead.
Don't Talk to Me About U2 Concerts. Not everyone is looking forward to US concerts this summer. Red Mum, a sharp, funny and well-ovbserved slice-of-life blog by a single mother, recalls:
My last experience of U2 has completely left me traumatised, so much so that I almost stick two fingers in my ears whilst loudly singing "la la la la la la la la la" ... [the la's go on for some time.]
I have been lucky and seen them in concert on a number of occasions but the whole experience of living in Dublin when they are playing kinda translates to the haves and have-nots of tickets. So when you are in the have-not category, you feel you are missing out on a very significant concert, which is sure to go down in the musical archives of time.
She recounts the trauma of found and lost tickets to see U2 at Slane that nearly ended her friendship with a "ticketloser" who managed to misplace them.
Worth a read for its almost Hornby-esque prose and sensibility that's either unintentiionally hilarious or by a future full-time author.
Blogging for Business. Should employees be able to blog about work? Should companies encourage it? What will the lawyers say? Consultant Tom Raftery will lead a panel discussion at the National Software Centre in Cork this Thursday at 6pm. We'll have a spy in the audience.
