Cautionary tale about smartphones

KILKENNY -- As much as I like clever smartphones, I prefer stable operations better. Since the summer of 2002, I have been well-served by a bulky Nokia 9210i Communicator. Some geeks sneer at the brick but it does more typing for this blog than any other keyboard. It edits Word documents and handles e-mail smoothly. But . . .

. . . since it's been dropped to the pavement a minimum of six times, its on-board microphone has lost its edge. People have started saying "you're breaking up" when before they could never guess I was using a mobile phone. I'm afraid I might start dropping data from the 244g phone, based on the rising number of "reformat Nokia 9210i" referrer strings that arrive here. For that reason, I'm glad I sync my stuff across a number of devices (the 9210i, Clie PEG UX-50 and my Dell laptop). Routine syncing protects your sanity. No matter how cool a new smartphone may be, once it's broken, it loses its sweetness.

A life hack worth considering.
