Four wiretaps

KILKENNY -- I no longer work around electronic shields but the controversy raging around American wiretapping of Hans Blix and Kofi Anan reminds me of four routine measures my office used to commission in the past.

1. Call the white van with the Tempest antenna. It's still widely used in the US. My Pentagon computer overheated when its Tempest shielding blocked efficient airflow.
2. Laser bugging. Just book a room opposite a meeting venue, fire your laser at the window and the system returns the voice channel off the window vibrations. Works well with sliding doors and room partition too.
3. USB, LSB, SSB harvests. Pull data signals from Upper Side Band. Many private jets used those frequencies when faxing trip reports while airborne. Silly spooks.
4. Ask Menwith. RAF Menwith monitors 2m phone calls per hour, nicked from satellites. They helped find Saddam when he moved from location to location. In a previous life, it was as simple as firing away an e-mail message to set up a downlink watch circuit.
