Rainy Day Books
DUBLIN -- I am roaming Grafton Street with Christmas shoppers and I plan to cash in some of my Hodges and Figgis vouchers and take up Eammon Fitzgerald's "Rainy Day Books of the Year" recommendations mainly because they're just what I'm looking for. Two books: Happy Day with the Naked Chef by Jamie Oliver and The Anglosphere Challenge by James Bennett.
Happy Day With The Naked Chef by Jamie Oliver (ISBN 078686852X). I like to eat. I like to cook. Jamie Oliver helps me do both. His books are chock-full of interesting things that make bland meals into exciting events. Most are sublime ingredients. His practise is leading me down the path of growing a herb garden and that means even more interesting mince dishes ahead.
The Anglosphere Challenge by James Bennett (ISBN 0742533328) provides background to the divergence between European interests and the globalistic values embedded in American ideals. This might not be what the author purports, but it's the reading I get from the cover notes. I want to learn more about the Anglosphere--all peoples who use the English language and who cherish freedom and individualism as political and cultural values. It's an important balance against the avowed socialist noises echoing from St. Luke's in Dublin.
