Electronic Reading Devices in my Bag
I GET DIRECT e-mail about mobile phones and electronic reading devices, more than any other kind of gadgets. A lot of the mail concerns the rise of Kindle but Kindle's rise is not ignored by Sony and Barnes & Noble. As regular readers know, I pay Sony an average of EUR 80 a month in new devices and consumeable items. Over on Amazon, the Kindle has been a pivotal growth driver. You can get more than 200,000 English-language books on it, along with nearly 100 newspapers and magazines, including The Irish Times. I won't buy a Kindle, although it starts shipping to Ireland on October 19th. I expect to have a 3G eReader and a touchscreen convetible next year. I'm waiting for holiday pricing. Forrester Research estimated that three million e-reader devices would be sold in the United States in 2009, up from an earlier estimate of two million.
