Twitter Making Front Page News in Ireland

TWITTER IS DEFINITELY a news source for Irish news editors because tweets have started appearing on the front pages of the Sunday broadsheets. This week, the Sunday Times gives away the bottom right of its front page to explain, "World Cup fans tweet in tongues." Meanwhile, the Sunday Independent carries an Agony Aunt column with the blaring headline, "I want to wed my boyfriend though I have to beg for sex." Twitter has come to the rescue in that regard with @patomahony1 offering up a few minutes on Wednesdays to help the poor damsel.

The cover shot for this week's Qik Sunday News comes from a report in the FT Weekender by Sophy Roberts about biodiversity. Clouds of butterflies are a beautiful sight and they are crucial to the environment.

Sunday Qik News

#activism

Activism (humanitarian aid to Gaza) gets continuing coverage in all media throughout Ireland.

#bookmark

I give Irish Missing Kids a bookmark, thanks to an excellent piece written by Jennifer O'Connell in Agenda magazine.

#bookshelf

I like Simon Kuper's Why England Lose: And Other Curious Football Phenomena Explained.

#create

Gary Shore's trailer is being lined up to make a €58m feature film. Shore, 28, graduated from the National Film School in Dun Laoghaire. IADT's graduate show rocked this year. The Tate Modern is using a new iPhone application that turns its galleries into a game aided at attracting visitors. Players collect artworks.

I believe the deceptively spacious tipi offers a more comfortable and stylish way of chilling out on the Clonmel campus. I want to get one as a student or staff lounge.

#education

Daniel McConnell writes, "College places facing the axe as budget cuts bite" in the Sindo. Entry points are rising and courses will be dropped. Tip: Consider Tipperary Institute for better student-teacher ratios and accredited third level education.

#ethics

The litany of aggogant narcissism continues in Irish politics. "Better a drunken but honest beggar than a Dail hypocrite," writes Justine McCarthy. Politicians feel they're entitled to expenses equal to half of their incomes and they're boldly claiming them. I think subsistence expenses need to be taxed and mileage expenses should be capped at no more than eight cents per mile.

Irish politicians get paid generous expenses. Thanks to freely-flowing information related to expenses claimed, front page stories have run all week on the precocious entitlements enjoyed by elected Irish politicians. In an era of fiscal scarcity, one would think the Minister for Finance would redline any questionable reimbursements. His staff know where the irregularities are occurring.

#event

Some things to consider in Ireland this week. Software developers should come along to Epicenter in TCD. There's a Computer Adventure Camp running next week in Thurles and Clonmel. The 3 Broadband Bus is parked in Thurles as well. NCAD's Graduate Exhibition is kicking off for one week only. Bloom in the Park is lovely. The annual pilgrimage by Spanish students to Ireland has commenced and you will find some of them milling around the Taste of Dublin this week.

#innovation

Here's an idea for the Irish Search and Rescue Corps: use drones. They are more useful for search and rescue than the human eye. More is explained about "The Spy in Your Sky" in today's Sunday Times Magazine. In the Sunday Business Post, Adrian Weckler thinks the "Irish tech czar's hands will be tied." He offers a three-point manifesto to be considered by the first Irish CIO. Shannon Development is doing good things with its Knowledge Network. Some day it should be reviewed by the Sunday Business Post. And virtualisation on Irish software developers' laptops deserves a case study approach by Computers in Business.

While everyone is watching oil spill out into the Gulf of Mexico, the energy giants are pumping gas from shale in Pennsylvania where I grew up. Danny Fortson explains in the Sunday Times "scramble for shale gas" today.

#meltdown

Plans to pour money into the black hole that is Anglo Irish Bank can only risk Ireland's recovery, according to several Irish Sunday broadsheet writers.

#music

Check my Audioboo slipstream if you want to hear the new release by the Scissor Sisters. They made it cool to get your freak on long before Gaga and they're back with a naughty new album.

#RIP

I miss Alan Ruddock and Dennis Hopper. I'm collecting remnants of their creativity.

#technology

I like the Brennan JB7. It can hold up to 5000 CDs. Everyone should have a way of finding every track in their lives. And if you ever needed a reason to make your stuff mobile-friendly, consider this: Walmart has set a long-term goal of serving more than one billion customers every week via e-commerce.

#twitter

Mark Tighe explains on the Sunday Times' front page how Trinity College and Dublin City University are launching a Twitter Translation Service. Use the #wc2010 hashtag to see what happens. The Sunday Independent finds help on Twitter for the women who isn't getting enough sex from her boyfriend. Jemima Khan thought Twitter was for the self-obsessed until she studied the experts. Now she offers her own tips on how to tweet and you can read how she has "been converted by the Twitter-meisters" in the Sunday Times. Buy that paper and you can also read about the bitch slapping between Una Mullally and Rosanna Davison photo.
