ONE THING VISITORS to my blogs tell me is the era of pervasive information and communications technology (PICT) has started. Every day, people come here looking for "digital signage" or "RFID" or "smartphone" or "ultrafast wireless." Put them all together and you have a PICT cocktail.
Small smart displays exist now, in the form of intelligent ringtones on phones or radio frequency ID (RFID) displays at checkout counters. Combine RFID with a wireless network and you have Tom Cruise entering a commercial store in The Minority Report. Before long, bar codes will be replaced by RFID tags. While I am aware of the privacy issues, I think we will accept the virtual air possible in a RFID world. Moreoever, I think it's a world we will see within 10 years.
