ESAT BT -- One of the things I received in the Post was a broadband installation kit from Esat BT. Too bad the materials do not include tips you need to know in order to avoid scams online. I've got a short list of tactics worth considering by those who plan to plug into an always-on Internet connection.
- Ring your operator and bar all premium-rate calls from your phone number. Once on broadband, unplug the dial-up modem.
- Don't click on unknown attachments because many of them install dialer software that could cost you more than €2 a minute.
- Never install anything from a download link unless you know what it is.
- Don't follow pop-up windows when they lead off the site you're visiting.
- Enhance your security with something like Zone Labs, Spybot or AdAware.
