UNDERWAY -- Two people slept in the aisle of the Clonmel-Dublin inter-city bus today. I board this bus once a week at 0630 in Kilkenny with people who are sleeping standing up. I've seen people sitting in the aisles before but today marks the first time I've made the 122-minute journey to Dublin with someone sleeping at my feet.
Along the way in County Laois, we followed a fire-warning red Dynaflow van with a prominent ISO9001 decal. The sewers and drains company van's rear bumper featured this bumper sticker:
Your shit is our bread and butter.
JJ Kavanagh runs the inter-city bus service which I have personally observed as a substantiation that Dublin's commuter belt extends more than 70 miles from the capitol. It's simply less expensive to live in the regions, even if it means sleeping on your morning commute. Plenty of the 50 people aboard this morning share this lifestyle.
