YET ANOTHER REASON to visit Philadelphia and return to South Street--to get a Cheese Grater Light. You can see these in Philadelphia's Mum Puppettheatre. The venue contains sconce lighting in the form of cheese graters attached to the walls. They also hang cheese graters from the ceiling in both the lobby and the theater proper.
Cheese Graters cast more shadows than light because they're given to light patterns and light diffusion--core ingredients of mood lighting. And that mood lighting sets up the audience for something offbeat or creative to happen on the stage.
Some of the best light sculptures in Philadelphia come from Warren Muller. Unfortunately, none of Muller's stuff is carried by Willie Duggan in Kilkenny. There's an Irish market for light sculpture evolved from found objects.
