STANDING ROOM ONLY for the Digital Rights Ireland seminar at Tech Camp Ireland proved the existence of a major undercurrent of support for the DRI agenda. Long-time bloggers know they are not the pressure points. Instead, the fulcrum pressurises the middle man--the ISP or the blog host. Even in 1984, William Smith did not have to carry a personal tracking device. Proposed legislation facilitates an overlay of your web browsing history, mobile phone call records and subject headings from all emails. Simple data forensics would yield a potent set of markers about people and their network of friends. This kind of data harvesting would change the environment for digital rights and freedom of expression in Ireland.
