WHILE THERE IS NO denying the hugely popular reach of Google for simple search, many of the Google subdomains barely dent the mainstream audience. Every time Google announces a new product, bloggers and commentators give it coverage but if Hitwise statistics are credible, consumers simply don't care much. As Heather Hopkins explains, "The most extreme example is Google Finance, which ranked #201 in the week to 20th May 2006, with .04% of category visits. Yahoo! UK & Ireland Finance was ranked #1 by contrast, with 8.30% of category visits."
The search engine market watches Google with interest. UK and Irish statistics show that Google powers 77% of UK-Irish internet searches, but that doesn't mean that Google dominates in all of the verticals it enters.
