I DID NOT KNOW that when Microsoft Word crashes and fails to show your lost document, you can often resurrect the lost data by shutting down, turning off your computer and powering back up again. I could not find the TEMP files using my electronic hoover when I lost two hours of work yesterday. However, the document was "recovered" by Word when I returned to my desk today. It turns out that Microsoft Word has been installed with a network-related default. Even though I had not logged onto the network, Microsoft Word had written its temporary file onto the network. And there it was--when I returned and powered up a day later. Stupid me for not thinking about the shutdown option when hunting for work lost by a software crash. I blame it on the weatherman--it's his fault we're having 25 degree days outside.
