Our visit to Ireland

GOOGLE FINDS 87.2m results when looking for our visit to Ireland and one of the top 10 results is a podcast. I hate to think my jaded views of transport in Ireland create the first impression for prospective tourists. Moreover, I have to respect the prospect that Google has started to index the spoken word.

Art on the Hill

ALONG WITH 29 others, I discovered my Cat hillwalkers weren't waterproof. We hiked up to Larry Kennedy's field, located directly above the centre of Clonmel, and created a piece of large visual art for people to enjoy. From the sound of my [19.5 MB 96 kbps MP3 file] podcast, the making of might be better craic than the viewing of. If you're around the sunny southeast after dark, you'll break into a smile if you look up at the hill that extends from a line drawn from the Cashel Road through Gladstone Street and halfway up the hill beyond. Implausible liquid explosives

SOME DAY I will itemise every hazardous material flight hour I recorded. Before takeoff on those missions, it was good practise to scan through the loaded pallets to see what was where. It helped that the most hazardous stuff was nearest to the back ramp. That way, you could open the ramp and push it overboard if things got tense. We weren't too bothered with liquids, even liquids that would explode if combined. We always carried HAZMAT liquids on separate pallets. Even if they leaked, they probably wouldn't mix and ignite.

Managing Your Identity

JON AIZEN, who previously gave me my Grateful Dead audio archives, has figured out that you could send your personal electronic identity details into PeopleAggregator where you could export it as FOAF or XFN/hCard and then send it back out somewhere else.  Alternatively, you could create a "mega-identity account with multiple persona." For Lazyweb trailblazers like Damien Mulley, Dapper is a go-to point when monitoring the behaviour of State agencies, dominant commercial enterprises or new faces online because it enables an RSS feed where none exists. If you write interesting stuff for online audiences and you're precious about your copyright, you should look at what Dapper is doing because its behaviour mimics other scrapers who are currently harvesting your stuff already. Dapper is a clever Web 2.0 application, something that let you leverage disparate web services without negotiating a business deal beforehand. The Irish companies who scrape and repackage like Dapper have clever IP masking that prevents them from being banned by sites who do not appreciate their presence.

Free Irish Energy

A FULL-PAGE advertisement by Irish IP firm Steorn in the Economist invites scientific appraisal of a technology that allegedly creates energy from magnetic fields. In normal scientific circles, you publish peer-reviewed articles and then release digestible information to the business press. There may be a reason Steorn is advertising its moves during the August silly season before subjecting its IP assets to a traditional review process. According to John Downes, "Steorn says the new technology allows for substantial amounts of excess energy to be created through a particular system for constructing magnetic fields, and that it could be used to enable the development of mobile phones that do not have to be recharged, and fuel-free cars." Open Note to Shemas Eivers

TO ECHO TOM Raftery and further inform Shemas Eivers, I want to note that blogs enhance search engine standing for people, products and programmes. Actually, a well-written blog item resonates its main points and earns commentary from other bloggers, effectively boosting the standing of the original point. This little commentary is an open note to Shemas Eivers, the managing director of Client Solutions, who might have doubted the impact that blogs have. Look up Shemas on Google and see if you can find first-person commentary among the top 10 results. When I looked, the top results came from people talking about Shemas and the bloggers had the strongest voices.

Our Culture of Sharing

MORE THAN HALF of the third level multimedia degree students I supervise have content in their backpacks that originate in file-sharing networks. That's a steady trendline, regardless of the piracy warnings emblazoned on the front of DVDs and cinema releases. Yet my anecdotal sample is much lower than in Sweden, "a country where 1.2 million out of 9 million citizens tell the census that they engage in file sharing," according to Wired News.

Blogging Makes You Smarter. Do the Maths.

GRAHAM NEARY affirms my contention that blogging makes you smarter. He's a third year maths student in Trinity College Dublin and has carved out time for blogging. As a descendant of Goldbach's Conjecture, I like mathematicians who blog. You need not be science-minded to blog well in college. Just look and listen to Technolotics, the Irish fry-up version of Diggnation. But when you do, please don't attribute their mental state soley to their blogging. It takes a special mind to embrace the walls of Trinity in the first place.
