I PAID FOR an early Christmas present--thank you, Liam. It flew in from San Jose. It's just a steno Moleskine notebook but more than that, it's part of the daily process that has served me better than any other highly digital organiser. After using Moleskines one and off for a decade, I look back on dust-covered splines and reflect on the snippets written, stories unfinished.
Friends chide me about the overpriced, faux-leather covered notebooks. Even so, the coverings demand more respect than a simple copybook bought in a stationers' shop. I measure that respect in the time I give those little notebooks. They help me think. They give me juice.
I've given away more Moleskines than I've filled in 2006. I think that those books will overflow with travel stories, sketches from art exhibits and cryptic comments on the heels of growing up in college. For now, I'm glad to have another stenoskine, knowing the way it helps me gather my thoughts as a writer.
