AFTER LISTENING TO a predictable rant from Michael O'Leary on the nightly news, I started thinking about the environmental cost of my summer travels. Those thoughts led to Jonathan Sanderson's post about the Commons environmental audit committee investigation of personal air travel offset schemes. If you are concerned about your carbon footprint, you should follow this meme, perhaps by subscribing to Sanderson's newsfeed. That's Jonathan at left.
There needs to be an accreditation authority for carbon offsets. We have Fairtrade accreditaion, Guaranteed Irish labeling and Irish beef tracking all in place by respected accreditors. Like Sanderson, I wonder why somebody with a recognisable brand does not step up to the mark and propose carbon offsets for individuals. Surely, Michael O'Leary would not intimidate.
I will be suprised if tickets purchased in Europe by EU passport holders after the year 2015 do not require flyers to offset the emissions they cause.
