BASED ON EMPIRICAL data, Dr. Cliff Arnall of Cardiff University developed an equation to predict the most depressing Monday of the year. He considers weather, unfulfilled New Year's resolutions, debt and days since Christmas. These data make 22 January the most depressing Monday of the year. And I have survived it by engaging in some deep thought, spurred by my collection of things that make the noose all the more easier to approach.
Ten things worth having to increase your level of misery:
- "Leaving Las Vegas" (directed by Mike Figgis) [7.5 of 10]
- "Sweet Sixteen" (directed by Ken Loach) [7.5 of 10]
- "Strange Fruit" (Billie Holiday, 1939)
- "This is the end" (The Doors, 1967)
- "Darwin's Nightmare" (directed by Hubert Sauper) [7.6 of 10]
- "Boys from the Blackstuff" (directed by Philip Saville) [9.3 of 10]
- "Down and Out in Paris and London" by George Orwell
- "The Crossing Guard" (directed by Sean Penn) [6.2 of 10]
- "Requiem for a Dream" (directed by Darren Aronofsky, as Damien notes below) [8.4 of 10]
- "A Short Film About Killing" (directed by Krzysztof Kreslowski) [8.2 of 10]
Enjoy!
