DICK WINTERS PASSED away on the second of January 2011 after losing his fight with Parkinson's disease. I grew up in Lancaster County within 30 miles of Dick Winters and I think I have a black and white photo of him painting Pennsylvania Power and Light trestles before he left for Fort Benning and airborne training. Winters lived and fought with a generation of Americans who knew the sacrifice of the Great Depression and the trauma of World War II. Part of my motivation to join the US Air Force came from the humble zeal of Dick Winters and a generation of men who lived and died for a cause. Their integrity and sacrifice set standards for us left behind. I bought Winters' battlefield memoirs in November 2010, thinking I could find him in Palmyra for a signature but Major Winters wasn't well. I'll keep his book in front of my Band of Brothers box set so I have to move Dick's book every time I play one of the DVDs inside.
