SOME CLEVER ARCHAEOLOGISTS are bolting handheld technology onto paper records to make media-rich heritage that might attract the global Irish diaspora to visit Ireland.
The Historic Graves project uses a system and sequence to co-ordinate and standardise an historic graveyard survey. I've talked to the facilitators and want to work alongside a few workshops as well as perform some fieldwork. I'm convinced that some of the data entry, data upload and publication overlaps our creative multimedia degree programme.
When the geo-located photographic survey is shared online along with memorial photographs containing primary names and dates, geneology sites like Ancestry.com could use the data as Level 1 records. The work being done by HistoricGraves.ie ensures Irish grave memorials are discoverable online. Add some multimedia stories to these Level 1 surveys and Ireland's deep history becomes embellished with academic quality and an authenticity grounded in the accents of local people. This kind of important research should appeal to "Irish people and those who think Irish".
