RTE WANTS TO offer an improved Saorview box, one with more capability than the satellite and Saorview receiver we have under our 11 year old TV.
But for this new service to be successful, the 174,000 Irish homes that have Saorview as their primary television service would need to see compelling reasons to spend the money for a Freesat dish. And to use the full capability of the new box, home owners should also connect to broadband. But that means paying for another monthlybill, something that tens of thousands of pensioners won't do.
Saorview is in 646,000 Irish homes and 645,000 homes pay for Sky services. The majority of Saorview customers are like our home--they use Irish digital television for second or third televisions, rather than as their primary service.
