PEOPLE HAVE CHANGED the way they interact with me electronically. Ten years ago, "ping me on Twitter" but now that has faded away.
I'm hit up on Messenger, Slack, WhatsApp or Wire now and because of this change in preferences, I feel like we have returned to closed social systems. This isn't a bad thing--in fact, it's a pathway to greater productivity because people are turning inward, often because places like Twitter and Facebook have become infested with political cross-currents.
In my personal experience, I use Twitter most for (1) private chat groups, (2) conversations on lists, (3) hashtagged chats and (4) breaking news. I have relegated nearly everyone I've met on Facebook to the status of "acquaintance" and that means I rarely see their posts in my newsfeeds.
I'm getting interesting audio from friends using Wire and there's great professional value inside several Slack channels where I learn technical things that keep me out of trouble.
