LIKE DERMOT CASEY, I believe every vibrant community has both an authentic virtual layer underpinning its physical real world presence. I suspect this idea will emerge as a talking point during #cong19, an unconference with a theme of "community". I met up with @dermotcasey in Dublin to chat about several ideas that form the core of Congversation 06, a podcast supporting people I've met during huddles in Cong, County Mayo every November.
Congversation #6 with Dermot Casey
I'm trying to record 100 audio clips before the next meet-up in Cong, using tools of mobile journalism to attempt the task. However, several well-worn pieces of my mobile technology aren't fit for purpose anymore. During my recording of Dermot, my Sony Xperia Z5 started injecting irritating clicks into the audio file and when I tried to remove them during post-production, I lost major parts of the recording. I'm learning many of the pitfalls we need to avoid when asking young members of Ireland's Youth Media Team to attempt to follow the same process. I know that I would have no problems if I stuck with simply recording audio clips using HiQ MP3 on Android or Voice Record Pro on iOS. However, I'm also trying to quickly create two minute video clips to accompany the process, like the YouTube clip I did using a battered iPhone 6 and the Sennheiser Memory Mic. While doing it, I learned it's important to set the audio levels in the mid range to avoid clipping the audio track.
Like Dermot, I enjoy attending the annual meet-up in Cong so I can explore ideas in depth and breadth. The action starts during a special cinema seating in the Ashford Castle Cinema on Friday evening then swarms all around the small town of Cong on the Saturday. Dermot expounds on the energy of the events in his audio clip.
