I SPENT 55 MINUTES on a catch-up Zoom Call with journalist and thinker Karlin Lillington today and want to mark my timeline with the event. Although the purpose of the call was to share what we think about the Fediverse, some of the preliminary commentary helped me resurface some important references to shared experiences. I need to sharpen the screenshot of Karlin before Google Images adds it to its collection.

Thinking about my Secondary Learning

WHILE ATTENDING a hands-on training session in Waterford, I was challenged by Mark Guerin to reveal a facet of my secondary learning outcomes. I believe reflective journaling is primary evidence of my secondary learning. [1] [2] If my students can produce high quality reflective journaling, they have achieved gold stars for secondary learning outcomes.

Taking Notes Across the Generations

YESTERDAY a visitor from the Philippines landed on my website insideview.ie to read how my family wrote and saved ideas. I started thinking that I no longer have to actually write anything. I can just talk about things and my blog will write itself.

I can talk to my Surface Books' screen and it will create text from speech. This has digitally changed the way I work.

Bringing Back Blogging

AS TWITTER ATROPHIES and Mastodaonie tries to find traction, I'm going to reintroduce blogging into the university modules I teach. And for the month of January, I'm resolved to create at least two blog posts a week.

The posts won't be all on my Old Skool Typepad because I've a microblog now as well as SharePoint News sites I've set up with RSS. Perhaps I can link to all of those locations by putting hyperlinked footnote at the bottom of each of the locations.

Blogging during Zoom Call #RUN_EU

I REVERTED TO FORM and started blogging during the four hours I spent on a Zoom call with 113 others who expressed an interested in learning more about how to successfully apply for research funding under RUN-EU. I saved my rough notes as part of this blog post (see link below) because I think it's important to establish open and distributed nodes of communications between researchers who are scattered throughout the EU.

Another Maker Using Micro.blog

I'M IMPRESSED by the people using Micro.blog infrastructure because a wide cross-section of them are makers and thinkers. I plan to use a recent github repo to enhance my own presence at topgold.micro.blog with the Paper theme. I've copied the installation steps below.

Twenty Years on Typepad Seeking Agency

I'VE BEEN PUBLISHING on Typepad at least once every fortnight since July 2002. I'm motivated by the thought that I'm creating agency in the process.

This has not been an easy row to hoe. Five years after I switched from Movable Type to Typepad, my average daily readership of Inside View fell below 1000 daily visitors. The downslope happened in mid-2007, even before it won "Best Technology Blog" in Ireland. Its peak viewership happened in late 2005, when all my work (i.e., photos and audio) emanated from my Typepad hub. Twenty year later, I still attract more than 1000 daily instances in aggregate but you have to count Flickr photostreams (around 400 a day), my YouTube channel (100 a day) and my podcasts (150 a day). Add 550 different people viewing my tweets and Instagram content and I'm back to 1000 daily impressions.

But I know my voice has faded in the mix.

First Mention of Blogs: 2 Aug 99

THE FIRST MAINSTREAM PUBLICATION to mention the word "blogs" was The New York Times on August 2, 1999. While blogging has receded as a touchpoint for everyday discussion, services like WordPress continue offering compelling reasons to host content on the open internet instead of behind closed apps such as Instagram and Facebook.

ELEVEN YEARS AGO, I abandoned Twitter as a firehose and started using it as a list-based process. I follow people on lists and dive into content based on hashtags or recommendations. Both Chris Byrne and John Tierney continue to be proof-positive that rewards follow people who share.
