BENEATH THE PILE of books (at left) sits the Sunday Business Post, subject of a 10-minute Qik video clip that I made about tech and business news from Ireland. A lot of the paper deals with new taxes, bank bailouts, and declining economic fortunes in Ireland. In my local area (South Tipperary), my kitchen radio hears local conversations from both Clonmel and Kilkenny. South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath is verbal with his criticism of the current government. "There's a time when he (the current Taoiseach) has to examine his own conscience and say 'I can do this or I can't" and in the minds of many in my housing estate, the current head of government has lost his power to govern. There are torrid times ahead for the current national government. [1] [2] [3] Not all of the paper deals with the possible collapse of the ruling coalition. The Sunday Business Post always offers interesting reviews of technology and tech companies and that fact becomes clear in the MP3 below.
Helpful Technology. There's a recurring story about shared mapping resources that makes its rounds in the Sunday papers. [4] Pinpoints on Google maps would do the job for a lot of the GIS projects that get column inches. Several items about Ryan Tubridy taking over the helm of the Late Late Show get covered. [5] I wonder about the average age of the Late Late viewer.
In other tech news, whiteboards [6], inexpensive tech [7], and new gadgets [8] [9] [10] get ink.
Training and Conferences. Whether a company really needs its own iPhone, Blackberry, Facebook or Ovi app is a call its management should consider but with smartphones often used as the second screen of many employees, it's often wise to look at leveraging mobile screens as part of comprehensive training and information strategies. Appchool.ie runs courses on iPhone application development. Training courses start at EUR 900. [11] [12] I've also seen clever training applications built for mobile screens through Channel Content. In related news, a business conference for start-up companies will take place in Limerick's Absolute Hotel on 11 October 2009. Business Camp targets an audience from across Ireland's midwest and sets out to provide information on how to start, finance and grow a business. [13]
