ALTHOUGH SUZY BYRNE may not approve of the cover shot for my 8-minute Qik flick through the Sunday papers, I think the Sunday Times' piece on her week brings blogging alive for readers. It might have contributed to Charles O'Sullivan's feeling about today's episode. There are other topics in both the Times and the Sunday Business Post that catch my eye, including the ash cloud, good ideas about recovering from the meltdown, technology pointers and a warning about rip-off Apple pricing. I've made a short summary below the break and offer an MP3 file for those using Listen on Android or for anyone subscribing to the podflow of this blog.
#ashtag
Travelers may invalidate their insurance if they fail to show for a cancelled flight due to volcanic ash. The ash cloud costs Ireland's tourism industry €20m a day--that counts losses to Ryanair and Aer Lingus. Volcanic ash has thrown Irish tourism into crisis.
#goodidea
Lots of good ideas in the Sunday papers, including Mark Little's "wisdom from the crowds", Digital Rights Ireland getting a hearing at the European Court of Justice, Ronan Skehill's hyperlocal pinpoints, the Lemass Forum, a review of inflated semi-state salaries, new rules for using Twitter inside the Irish national broadcaster, and the power of good investigation.
#meltdown
Jennifer O'Connell writes about the pressures felt by Sandwich Women and those pressures are increasingly greater with financial meltdown all across Ireland. According to David McWilliams, inflating the euro is the only way out for the currency. Brian Cowen resigning is the only hope his party has of scraping out a strong minority presence in the next general election. Greek flames are just the start of problems for the weak eurozone economies.
#ripoff
Apple charges too much for movies delivered to Irish electronic devices.
#technology
Adrian Weckler points to better broadband in the months ahead, but you have to be Dublin-based to avail of the fastest speeds. Ovi Maps remain one of my strongest recommendations for people traveling on a budget.
