"FAILURE" AND "SHAME"are two words that Irish politicians must learn to use because they are the only nouns that define the current coalition government. Ireland has sunk deeply into a morass of debt, sacrificing some of its national sovereignty to financial masters living in other European capitals. That theme runs through the mainstream Irish press today and with it some very strong murmurings that should result in a change of Taoiseach early in the new year.
In the Irish Times Weekend Review, Fintan O'Toole nails popular sentiment underlying what many politicians are meeting on the hustings. "Fear, rage, despair and distrust have been in the pot for two years. The new ingredient is shame." I wouldn't expect the current government to survive past March 2011.
