ONE YEAR AGO, we were dripping water into our sink to prevent our main water supply from freezing. All our neighbours were doing the same thing.
This year, we're a little ahead of the freezing permafrost because I'm ready to lay trace heating around the water mains. I've started the job on the same day that our electricity provider reminded me to go online and update my meter reading manually. It will be interesting to see how much we're actually paying to keep our water flowing when it comes time to pay the a household charge to the Irish government. Although the government did not build our house, a lack of local authority inspectors ensured that many of the homes on our housing estate have their main water supply placed only four inches below the ground. Because of that, I've got to lay down trace heating and extruded polystyrene in the hope that we can keep water flowing all winter long.
