THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE guide to higher education in Ireland lists the Limerick Institute of Technology slightly above the Cork Institute of Technology in The Sunday Times University Guide 2013. I work for the LIT.
In fact, the Sunday Times names LIT as "Institute of Technology of the Year". The review says "LIT has leapt up eight places in our league table a year on from its merger with Tipperary Institute", my former employer. The results suggest there has been positive synergy with the merger.
The review points out, "LIT has made big inroads in improving its dismal unemployment rate, down from 21% to 15% in the latest league table results. Its student-staff ratio, 12.9:1, is third against its third-level competitors and the proportion of studnets graduating with first-class or 2:1 degrees is 54%, up from 49% in last year's league table".
There are international accolades worth mentioning. "The fashion department at LSAD has been named as one of the top 50 fashion colleges worldwide in an independent American guide while six students from the visual communications programme scooped awards at the YCN student awards, an European-wide competition".
As an indication of the forward-looking staff, new programmes launch every year. In Clonmel, we have taken in our first cohort of animators. Next September, a bachelor of business in entrepreneurship is starting.
