Cable Jive makes the iStubz, a USB cable for iPhones and iPods. You get either 22 cm or 7 cm lengths from Amazon and because I carry one in my spaghetti bag, I have can keep my iPod running for a full day. The iStubz is the best eight dollar accessory I've bought this decade. The cable lets me sync without getting tangled.It keeps my iPhone within arm's reach. It's doubly useful when coupled with the socket-to-USB converter packaged with the iPhone. Recommended.
